ABOUT Rat Terriers
Rat Terriers are a true American breed. Originally developed by homesteaders for vermin control, they were also used for hunting small game. Today’s Rat Terrier thrives as a family dog and active pet and their athleticism and biddability make them excellent performance dogs in a variety of dog sports.
The heritage of the Rat Terrier is diverse and includes many breeds. They come in two recognized sizes – miniature (10-13 inches) and standard (13-18 inches). They may have erect, button, or tipped ears (mismatched and rose ears are also common but faulted). Tails can be full length, docked, or naturally bobbed. They come in just about every coat color and pattern except for brindle, merle, and albino.
Traditionally bred as a pack hunting breed they are not prone to dog aggression like many other terrier breeds. They can be aloof with strangers, but should not be fearful or reactive. They are great with children, can be taught to respect cats, are highly motivated to please, will be up for any activity, but are also equally comfortable lounging around the house. Due to their atypical characteristics they’re often described as “terrier lite” because they are less intense and easier to manage than a typical terrier.
ABOUT Meraki
My history with the breed goes back to my childhood. I grew up with Rat Terriers and fond memories of my childhood dogs sparked a desire to preserve this breed for future generations to enjoy. I got my first show prospect in 2010 and connections made through that enabled me to obtain my first breeding prospect in 2016. I bred my first litter in 2018 and have since produced numerous high achieving performance and show puppies, in addition to some amazing pets who bring their families endless joy.
I am a huge advocate for genetic testing and all of my dogs are tested for cardiac, patella, primary lens luxation, and hip dysplasia prior to breeding. Temperament is also a high priority to me and I strive to produce dogs who are excellent breed ambassadors.
As a newer breeder I am eternally grateful to all of those who have offered mentorship and guidance and helped me to build my program and achieve so much success.
ABOUT Our Puppies
Our dogs are pets first and foremost. We do not have a kennel and all of our dogs reside in our home. Our litters are raised in our family room so they are exposed to the daily activity of the home. We set our puppies up for success by providing them with a variety of enrichment activities and obstacles to build confidence. Throughout their development we provide regular updates with those on our puppy list and work with trusted friends to evaluate each puppy to determine the best home for them. Puppies are placed no earlier than 8 weeks and will be registered with AKC, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, and come with a contract and health guarantee. We are available 24/7 for support for the life of our dogs. We loved them first and we’ll love them always.
